National Science Bowl® for Middle School

A national academic competition for middle school students (grades 6-8) covering science and math topics in a fast-paced question-and-answer format. Teams compete regionally, with winners advancing to the National Finals.
About
The National Science Bowl® is a highly publicized national academic competition organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It challenges middle school students (grades 6, 7, or 8) in a fast-paced question-and-answer format covering scientific topics in earth science, physical science, life science, math, and general science. Teams consist of four or five students and a teacher who acts as an advisor and coach. Regional competitions are held across the nation, with the winners advancing to the National Finals in the Washington, D.C. area. Registration for the 2027 regional competitions is anticipated to open in October 2026.
Who's eligible
Middle school students (grades 6, 7, or 8) enrolled in the team's school. Teams of 4 or 5 students with a coach.
How to enroll
Schools pre-register one team online through the designated portal. All team members must attend the same school.
