MIT PRIMES-USA, a program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Mathematics Department, is a free, year-long online research program for high school sophomores and juniors residing in the United States. It offers an opportunity to work with MIT mathematicians on original research problems, with the goal of producing publishable results. The program is highly selective, looking for students with demonstrated extraordinary mathematical ability, potential for original research, and self-motivation for independent study. While the deadline for the 2026 cycle has passed, applications for the 2027 cycle are set to open in September 2026. The program runs in phases: advanced reading from January to March, active research from March to June, and a write-up period from September to December. Preferred qualifications include being a USAMO or USAJMO qualifier, achieving an A in a college-level proof-based math course, or participating in a selective summer math program with a recommendation.
