The National Science Bowl, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is a fast-paced, buzzer-style quiz competition for middle school students (grades 6-8). Participants answer challenging questions across various science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and energy. Registration for the 2027 regional competitions will open on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 12:00 noon Eastern time. Teams typically consist of 4-5 students and one coach from the same middle school. Regional competitions are held across the U.S. in the spring, with the National Finals in April. The program is generally free for DOE-sponsored competitions.
Who's eligible
Middle school students (grades 6-8). Teams of 4-5 students and one coach from the same middle school.
